Punchd was founded by Grantland Chew and Reed Morse in 2010, and Google acquired it in July 2011. The app offered digitally loyalty cards for different businesses it collaborated with. Customers could use it to easily save multiple cards on it and track their reward points.
In December 2012, Google announced they were shutting down the app on June 7, 2013. Customers could still use their loyalty cards and redeem their points until that date. After that, the tool was deleted on both Android and iOS.
The Punchd team explained on their website that they aimed to “improve and simplify the experience for small business owners” and that they would continue to do that in other Google projects.
However, as with many other Google tools over the years, an unofficial reason for the decision seemed that not enough businesses were interested in partnering with the service.
